Theoretically, unchecking an item in "Services" in the System Configuration Utility, stops that item from running.  With Norton 360, that doesn't work.
Norton 360 v.4 is the primary difficulty. While it's a wonderful program, there are times that it needs to be shut off so as not to interfere with other things. The program does not have a mechanism for turning it off. This is the only way. I originally had v. 3 and that worked -- uncheck the Norton 360 circle and it turned off. This began when I upgraded to v.4. I even tried going to "Services" and tried turning it off there -- won't turn off. I have encouraged Norton (through the techie with which I worked for over four hours -- took control of the machine and same thing happened. We tried all other kinds of things. We finally agreed that Norton should have a "turn off" button or something as part of the program. It would be fine if the services device would turn it off, but.... I have a picture of what happens with the System Utility in back of the message if someone would like to see it. When I open the Utility and do anything with any of the items I get this message: "An access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified change." I AM the computer Administrator and nobody else uses the computer.

Norton has a self-protection mechanism which prevents normal access - you'd have to repost your query in one of the Norton forums and see if they can help there.-- Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth
